MADRID (AP) — A Spanish security official says authorities have arrested a person suspected of being involved in the disappearance of an American woman from Arizona who went missing in April while hiking a famed Christian pilgrimage route.
The official says the arrest happened Friday as about 300 officers searched the northern region of Asturias where Denise Thiem, 41, was last seen April 5 in the town of Astorga. It lies on the El Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, also called the St James Way.
The official did not disclose further information about the suspect and spoke on condition of anonymity because of rules preventing the official from being named.
The U.S. Embassy in Madrid declined comment, citing privacy rules that prevent disclosure of information about the case.
