SAP CEO Recovering after Losing Eye in Accident

Thursday, 17 September 2015 01:46 PM EDT

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Bill McDermott, CEO of business software company SAP SE, says he's recovering after a serious accident that cost him his left eye.

McDermott told Germany's Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily in an interview that he'll be medically cleared to fly again in October so he can return to the company's headquarters in Walldorf, Germany.

McDermott said he fell while carrying a glass of water downstairs at night after a family gathering in the United States in July. He was injured by one of the glass shards and underwent surgery.

He said he had remained productive between surgeries while in the United States and that his experience had inspired him to think about ways software could improve medical records and treatment.

SAP says the accident was announced internally to staff at the time.
