Romania Premier Summoned to Explain Why TV Must Quit Studios

Tuesday, 16 February 2016 09:43 AM EST

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Romania's Senators have voted to summon the prime minister to Parliament to explain why a widely-watched television station has been ordered to move out of its premises.

Senators voted 70-2 Tuesday to bring Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos to Parliament on Wednesday to say why financial authorities have given the Intact group, owners of Antena television group, five days to evict their studios.

The state confiscated the studios last year following a court ruling to recuperate damages from a money laundering case.

However, Senate speaker Calin Popescu Tariceanu called the development "an obvious, brutal attempt to suppress liberties in the Constitution."

Media mogul Dan Voiculescu, former owner of the group, began a 10-year sentence for money laundering in 2014.

The court ordered his property be confiscated to cover damages.
