Poland Demands Management at Top Stud be Changed

Monday, 04 April 2016 02:47 PM EDT

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland's agriculture minister has demanded that the management of a stud in eastern Poland be changed, after the death of a second Arabian mare on lease from a stud owned by Shirley Watts, the wife of Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts.

The April 2 death of Amra, from colic, was the third death of an Arabian mare from an intestinal disorder since October at the Janow Podlaski stud that breeds and auctions high-priced Arabian horses. Agriculture Minister Krzysztof Jurgiel has said he suspects foul play. Prosecutors are investigating.

The farm has been in the spotlight lately. In February, its long-time manager, Marek Trela was unexpectedly fired by the country's new agriculture authorities over allegations of mismanagement and over the death in October of the farm's most precious mare, Pianissima.
