Moldova Groups Call Fresh Protests to Demand Early Elections

Friday, 29 January 2016 12:30 PM EST

CHISINAU, Moldova (AP) — Two Moldovan opposition parties and a civic group have called for fresh protests next week to demand early elections and an investigation into more than $1 billion that disappeared from three banks.

The groups said Friday they plan peaceful protests in the capital of the impoverished East European nation next week and will continue until their demands are met. They did not specify which day they will start.

Many street protests have taken place in recent months over anger at the massive sum of money that disappeared ahead of 2014 elections.

Moldova's pro-European Prime Minister Pavel Filip, who took office earlier this month, has promised to tackle corruption. But many are not reassured, seeing him as a symbol of the nation's corruption due to his ties to a wealthy businessman.
