Italy Stages Sit-in at Egypt Embassy over Student's Death

Thursday, 25 February 2016 05:03 PM EST

ROME (AP) — Several dozen people have staged a sit-in outside Egypt's embassy in Rome to demand the truth about the torture and death of an Italian student in Cairo.

The protest Thursday organized by Amnesty International marked one month since Giulio Regeni's death. It came a day after Egypt's Interior Ministry reported that investigators believed revenge for "personal reasons" was behind the murder, and warned against believing reports that the Egyptian police were involved.

Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni effectively dismissed the finding, telling lawmakers that Italy wouldn't be content with "convenient truths or improbable leads, like the one suggested" on Wednesday. He demanded access to all information from Egypt.

Regeni disappeared Jan. 25, when police were out in force to quash any sign of protests marking the anniversary of Egypt's 2011 uprising.
