Greek Press Unions Expand Strike against Pension Reforms

Monday, 25 April 2016 09:26 AM EDT

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek press unions have expanded a strike to protest bailout creditor-demanded reforms of their taxpayer-funded pension fund, leaving the country without newspapers and news broadcasts for several days.

Journalists' unions launched their protests last week, holding two-day strikes for print, broadcast and internet media. A new three-day walkout was later called from 6 a.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, and unions are threatening further rolling strikes.

No regular TV or radio news bulletins or programs were being broadcast Monday, with the exception of a single, 15-minute bulletin. Most internet news sites were not refreshing their content and newspapers were not printed.

Press unions object to their pension fund's merger with all others, which will end the independence of the fund.
