Captain of Speedboat in Fatal Collision Appears in Court

Wednesday, 17 August 2016 09:03 AM EDT

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — The captain of a speedboat that collided with a tourist boat off the Greek island of Aegina, leaving four people dead, has appeared in court and was given until Friday to prepare his defense.

Relatives of the victims shouted insults and were held back by police as the 77-year-old arrived at the courthouse in Greece's main port city of Piraeus on Wednesday.

The speedboat collided Tuesday with a tourist boat carrying more than 20 people from the island to a beach on a nearby islet. The dead included a 5-year-old girl and her father. Authorities initially said the child was about 9.

The health ministry says 16 people in all were hurt, with five requiring hospital treatment. Two suffered serious injuries, including a woman whose leg was partially severed.
