German-Danish Artists Stage Quiet Protest of Syrian Violence

German-Danish Artists Stage Quiet Protest of Syrian Violence

Thursday, 13 October 2016 12:13 PM EDT

BERLIN (AP) — A German-Danish art group known for provocative actions mocking political leaders has launched what they call a "poetic" protest to draw attention to ongoing violence in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

The Surrend group has painted two serene scenes of Aleppo in the past, which it's sharing over social media and encouraging people to download and share themselves.

Danish artist Jan Egesborg says his group had left political satire because it had become too dangerous, noting the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris.

But seeing Aleppo's destruction, he says they decided they had to do something.

He says "it's the end of civilization what's happening there, and from our point of view there is too little criticism ... and we decided to do something in a more poetic way."
