Saturday, 13 August 2016 08:24 AM EDT

BERLIN (AP) — Chancellor Angela Merkel is calling together top German companies for meetings on how the country can best integrate last year's flood of asylum-seekers into the workplace.

The Bild newspaper reported Saturday that Merkel has invited representatives from companies like Volkswagen and Siemens to a meeting in mid-September at the chancellery in Berlin. It reports that Merkel's is hoping to learn from top managers what businesses can do to help bring migrants in to the workforce.

Germany registered some 1 million migrants in 2015 alone, and part of Merkel's strategy to deal with the numbers is to help qualified asylum-seekers quickly learn German, receive training and get jobs. Germany is also speeding up the process of sending migrants who do not qualify for asylum back to their home countries.
