Cologne Attacks Suspect Nabbed in Switzerland

Thursday, 28 April 2016 01:00 PM EDT

BERLIN (AP) — A Moroccan man wanted in connection with the New Year's attacks in Cologne has been arrested in Switzerland.

Police in Konstanz say the 19-year-old was observed shoplifting at a store in the southern German town Wednesday before crossing the nearby border to Switzerland.

When Swiss police checked his identity they found that he was the subject of a European arrest warrant.

Swiss Justice Minister spokesman Folco Galli said Thursday that the unnamed man has agreed to be extradited to Germany.

Cologne prosecutor Ulrich Bremer says the man is suspected of involvement in a theft and sexual assault.

Bremer says prosecutors have received 1,168 criminal complaints in connection with the New Year's attacks, including 492 allegations of sexual assault — 152 people, mostly foreigners, are the subject of criminal investigation.
