Official: Hotel in France Evacuated as Man Holes up inside

Tuesday, 19 July 2016 02:15 PM EDT

PARIS (AP) — An armed man refusing to pay his bill has barricaded himself in his hotel room in southern France, prompting jittery authorities to evacuate the hotel.

An official close to the investigation said the man had a knife and was overheard making threats Tuesday. The official was not authorized to speak on the record as the situation was ongoing. A second official said there were unconfirmed reports the man had been seen with a suspicious parcel with wires showing.

The incident in Bollene, 45 kilometers (28 miles) north of Avignon, comes as France has been shaken by its third major attack in 18 months. A Tunisian man in a rented truck plowed through a holiday crowd July 14 in the southern city of Nice, killing 84 people and wounding hundreds.
