Thousands Rally for Brussels 'march against Hate'

Sunday, 17 April 2016 11:17 AM EDT

BRUSSELS (AP) — Thousands of people have rallied in Brussels for a "march against hate" in the wake of the suicide bombings in the city last month which killed 32 people.

Police said Sunday that around 6,500 people had taken part. No incidents were reported.

People of several religious faiths turned out for the peace march, which went by the Molenbeek neighborhood.

Many suspects in the attacks on the Brussels airport and subway on March 22 and the Paris massacre last November lived in or moved through Molenbeek.

Marchers were urged not to wear backpacks. One Brussels bomber detonated an explosives-filled backpack, and police have been searching for a second pack carried by an accomplice.

The rally was supposed to take place on March 27, but was cancelled over security fears.
