LONDON (AP) — Leon Kossoff, a British artist who painted his home city of London in all its moody glory, has died. He was 92.

Los Angeles' LA Louver gallery, which represents Kossoff, announced his death Friday. No cause was given.

Born in 1926 to Russian Jewish immigrants, Kossoff grew up in London's tough East End and served in the army in World War II before studying art.

He's considered a member of the "School of London" group of post-war artists alongside Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and Frank Auerbach. Kossoff is best known for his scenes of London's streets, churches, subway stations and railway bridges, rendered in dark-hued, thickly layered oil paint.

Kossoff's work has been shown around the world, including London's National Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
