Scottish Legal Body Rejects Lockerbie Bombing Appeal Bid

Thursday, 05 November 2015 02:15 PM EST

LONDON (AP) — A Scottish legal body has quashed a bid for a posthumous appeal for the only man convicted of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing.

Abdel Baset al-Megrahi was convicted of blowing up Pan Am Flight 103 over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, killing all 270 people.

Al-Megrahi lost one appeal and abandoned another before he was freed in 2009 on compassionate grounds. He died of cancer in 2012, still protesting his innocence.

Some Lockerbie victims' relatives believe he was unfairly convicted. Last year they applied to the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission, which can send miscarriages of justice back to the courts.

The commission on Thursday refused the application. It said al-Megrahi's lawyers and family had not supplied all the relevant papers and it was "unable to consider the relevant matters properly."
