Russian Espionage on the Rise Is Biggest Threat, Sweden Says

Wednesday, 18 March 2015 09:14 AM

Russia has increased espionage in Sweden, seeking to purchase weapons and recruit agents, the nation's Security Service said.

Russian agents, often under diplomatic cover, collect information on Swedish defense, politics, economy, science and political refugees, the Security Service said in an annual assessment. The activities have ratcheted up amid the crisis in Ukraine, the service said.

"A less stable security policy situation in our vicinity imposes specific demands on us to follow the illegal intelligence operations that we know go on in Sweden," said Anders Thornberg, the agency's chief, said in the report.

The secret service has stopped "several attempts" by Russian military intelligence to buy embargoed or secret material, according to the report. Other activities included attempts to recruit agents and carry out hacking.

Security has become a main focus in the countries around the Baltic Sea amid increased tension with Russia, which has been boosting its military capabilities. The crisis in Ukraine has caused the most serious confrontation between Russia and the U.S. and the EU since the Cold War. Sweden underwent its largest mobilization since that era in the autumn amid a hunt for an underwater vessel in the Stockholm archipelago.
