About 15 armed robbers made away with an estimated 9 million euros ($9.5 million) of jewels being transported between Paris and Lyon Tuesday night.

The attackers fled after stopping two armored vans close to a toll booth on a highway connecting the two cities, Agence France-Presse reported today. No one was injured, AFP said. A spokesman for the national police declined to comment.

Police and firemen intervened near the toll booths at Avallon, which weren’t damaged, a spokeswoman for highway operator APRR, said in a telephone interview, asking not to be named in line with company policy. Burned out vehicles were found nearby, she said.

The robbery adds to a spate of such jewelry thefts in recent months in France. In January, two hostages were taken in a robbery at a jewelry store in Montpellier. Six months earlier, pieces, including diamond-studded watches, valued at about $136 million were stolen by a lone gunman at the Carlton Hotel in Cannes.
