Portugal on Wildfire Alert; Has Some Success

Wednesday, 05 September 2012 06:36 AM EDT

LISBON, Portugal — After using almost two dozen water-dumping aircraft for three days, crews in Portugal have extinguished most of the country's major forest fires.

Emergency services remain on maximum alert however, as the Meteorological Institute is warning that the entire country is still at high risk of further wildfires due to the hot, dry weather.

The Civil Protection Service said about 200 firefighters battled four blazes in northern areas Wednesday.

On Tuesday, almost 7,000 firefighters were called out as strong winds fanned the flames. Spain and France sent aircraft in to help.

Portugal is in the grip of a months-long drought that has left forests and scrubland vulnerable to fire.
