NEW YORK — A man was waiting for Deloris Gillespie in her fifth-floor Brooklyn apartment, as she went up the elevator carrying groceries. His face is one she surely must have recognized.
Surveillance video from inside the small elevator shows that he looked something like an exterminator, with a canister sprayer, white gloves, and a dust mask.
The sprayer, however, was full of flammable liquid.
When the elevator opened Saturday afternoon, Jerome Isaac sprayed the 73-year-old woman "sort of methodically" and then set her on fire, according to police.
Isaac, 47, explained to police later that he did it because she owed him $2,000 for some work he had done for her.
