Upper Midwest Expecting Weekend Winter Wallop

Friday, 10 December 2010 11:00 PM EST

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A major winter storm is forecast to dump a foot or more of snow in parts of the upper Midwest during the weekend, followed by dangerously cold temperatures.

The National Weather Service says the storm is taking shape Friday over the Rocky Mountains and should start producing snow late Friday in northern Nebraska and Iowa, southeastern South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota. It's forecast to spread east into Minnesota's Twin Cities and western Wisconsin by Saturday.

A swath from just west of the Twin Cities eastward into western Wisconsin is expected to get the most snow. It also could bring snow to northern Illinois and Indiana, southern Michigan and across the Great Lakes region.

Temperatures in some places are expected to plunge into double digits below zero by Sunday.
