Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Monday unveiled a reopening plan for the state, with retail businesses, bars, restaurants and offices in the northern region and upper Peninsula allowed to open starting Friday.
Whitmer, a Democrat, earlier this month extended the stay-at-home order until at least May 28.
Michigan has 51,915 confirmed cases of coronavirus, with 4,915 deaths. The update Monday represents an increase of 773 cases and 24 deaths.
The partial reopening includes two regions – 6 and 8 – what consist of 17 northern Michigan counties and the entire Upper Peninsula.
"This is a big step, and it’s right before the holiday weekend," Whitmer said at a Monday press briefing. "I want to encourage everyone to stay smart and stay safe. Keep your wits about you. Let’s not all go rushing out and force a closure."
Whitmer’s order also permits for small social gatherings of up to 10 people in both regions.
"The data has shown in these regions of our state that we can phase more sectors into re-engagement of our economy," Whitmer said. "When it comes to new cases per million, percent of positive tests and deaths, these regions are far below the statewide average."
The order does not permit the reopening of barbers, salons, spas, movie theaters, casinos or gyms.
