Title: "Whitewash: What the Media Won't Tell You About Hillary Clinton, but Conservatives Will"

Author: L. Brent Bozell and Tim Graham

Publisher: Crown Forum

In the book "Whitewash: What the Media Won't Tell You About Hillary Clinton, but Conservatives Will," by L. Brent Bozell and Tim Graham, the inside cover asks, Why Hillary? “How did the first lady to a disgraced impeached president become a presidential front-runner despite never having held elective office before 2001; her staggering number of personal political and financial scandals and her leftist political agenda?”

The authors have a ready answer: a media so enamored of Hillary Clinton that they have no problem shamefully protecting, defending, promoting, covering up her numerous scandals, and relentlessly advancing her presidential ambitions.

In this meticulously researched book the authors show how, from the very beginning, the media has sought to portray Mrs. Clinton as Time magazine’s Margaret Carlson says Hillary’s friends described her: as an “amalgam of Betty Crocker, Mother Teresa, and Oliver Wendell Holmes." Beginning with an examination of the Gennifer Flowers scandal that broke at the time Bill Clinton was seeking the presidency, Bozell and Graham show how the media leapt to the Clinton’s defense, setting the pattern it would follow from that point on — no matter how well documented the charges against the Clintons were, they were victims of a smear while the accusers were always villains.

Wrote the authors: “reporters knew all along that Bill Clinton was a serial adulterer and therefore also a serial liar about his sham of a marriage. That made Hillary a serial liar of course as she repeatedly aided and abetted that myth with statements of her own. This too, the media accepted.”

They quote Washington Times editorial page editor Tony Blankley as telling them "they took for granted that Hillary knew that she was lying and they chose not to report it. They subordinated their journalism for their support for Hillary.”

Noted the authors, “It wouldn't be the last time."

Among the voluminous quotes illustrating the homage paid to Hillary by some of the nation’s best-known journalists are some that simply make you want to reach for the barf bag. In a Time magazine cover story, part of which the book quotes, Margaret Carlson pulled out all the stops composing a hymn to the sainted wife of President Clinton, and producing a classic journalistic emetic.

"As the icon of American womanhood she is a medium through which the remaining anxieties over feminism are being played out,” Carlson rhapsodized. “She is on a cultural seesaw held to a schizophrenic standard: everything she does that is soft is a calculated cover-up of the careerist inside; everything that isn't a putdown of women who stay home and bake cookies . . . perhaps in addition to the other items on her agenda Hillary Rodham Clinton will define for women that magical spot where the important work of the world and love and children and an inner life all come together. Like Ginger Rogers, she will do everything her partner does, only backwards and in high heels and with what was missing in [former Bush campaign manager Lee] Atwater — a lot of heart.”

Another nausea-producing anthem to St. Hillary was offered by The Washington Post’s Martha Sherrill who the authors quote as having declared in a May 4, 1993 Post story, “in the midst of redesigning America's healthcare system and replacing Madonna as our leading cult figure, the new first lady has already begun working on her next project far more metaphysical and uplifting.”

That project? Nothing less than “defining who we are as human beings in this post modern age.” Sherrill added that “She has goals but they appear to be so huge and so far off — grand and noble things twinkling in the distance — that is hard to see what she's sees. She is both impersonal and poignant — with much more depth, intellect and spirituality than we are used to in a politician.”

Perhaps the worst characterization of St. Hillary came from Newsweek’s Evan Thomas, grandson of the late Socialist presidential candidate Norman Thomas. He described Hillary as “a Joan of Arc figure, persecuted for her righteous crusade.”

From the first bimbo eruptions to Hillary’s current campaign for the Democratic Party presidential nomination where the media allows her to dance gracefully away from anything but the softest of questions, “Whitewash” chronicles the career of a woman whose dark side is carefully concealed by a subservient media which all but sanctifies her.

In an interview with Bozell, Rush Limbaugh touched on the pass given to Hillary by what he calls the “drive-by media”: “She doesn’t have to answer questions. She won't go anywhere where she has to answer hard questions . . . ‘I want to have a chat with the American people. I want to know what's on their minds.’ It's a trick. It’s the same trick she used when she ran for Senate. The media loves it. It wows them to say . . . she only wants what's best for the people. Hillary sits back and lets the media spread useful myths about her.”

Rush summed up it all up: "The drive-by media, as I call them, is a giant cover-up machine for the Clintons. To this day it is participating in helping write a legacy of Bill Clinton because his administration did not produce one that is suitable and positive so the quest goes on to write the positive . . . Hillary is part of it.”

With this invaluable expose, Brent Bozell has broken through the soft curtain the media has kept between Hillary Clinton and the American people. He shows conclusively that the so-called mainstream media cannot be trusted to report the facts about their beloved Hillary, or for that matter, anything else.

The truth is not in them.
