White Voters Flock to Romney

Mitt Romney is dominating the white vote like no other presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan won re-election in a landslide in 1984.

Romney is winning over white votes by more than 20 points in polls by Fox News, Gallup, Monmouth University, and the Pew Research Center, and is up in a Washington Post-ABC News poll by 11 points.

In 2008, the Post reports, roughly three-quarters of voters were white, so gigantic leads among that demographic might make up for possible shortfalls for Romney among groups that break for Barack Obama.

Based on recent polls, Romney could lose the Latino vote by 40 or 50 points, but still be able to make up the difference in votes because of his huge lead among whites.

Latinos made up about 9 percent of voters in 2008 and John McCain lost with them by 36 percent on election day. Obama currently holds a 49-point lead according to a national poll of Hispanic voters by Latino Decisions .

The Post reports that losing the Latino vote by as much as 10 points more than McCain would amount to about a 1 percent shift in the popular national vote, assuming that the percentage of registered Latino voters increases this year over the last election.
