The Food and Drug Administration has frequently found itself at odds with the White House in its attempts to push new regulations on the American public. The regulations involve such things as sunscreens, asthma inhalers, and movie theater popcorn,
The New York Times reports.
The popcorn regulation that would have required movie houses to post calorie counts was derailed by a White House who feared it would be more fodder for those who often mock such regulations as coming from the nanny state.
The battle over regulations has often involved Nancy-Ann DeParle, President Barack Obama’s chief health adviser, FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg. and Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius.
A Times examination found the Obama administration has often been more cautious on regulatory issues than the FDA, an agency with many career employees who believe decisions should be based on science and not political concerns. The White House maintains any disagreements with the FDA are normal.
“Under President Obama’s leadership, the Food and Drug Administration has new authority and resources to help stop kids from smoking, protect our food supply, and approve more affordable prescription drugs,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said, according to the Times.
