Summer Trial Expected on Pa. Voter ID Law

By    |   Friday, 14 December 2012 11:06 AM EST

The judge who issued a temporary injunction against Pennsylvania’s new voter identification law says he expects a trial next summer on a request for a permanent stay.

An order laying out the schedule is likely to be issued by Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson in the next few days, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Friday.

The law requiring voters to present a valid photo at the polls, was pushed through the Republican-controlled legislature and signed into by GOP Gov. Tom Corbett. It was the subject of a lengthy court battle this past summer before Simpson stopped it from being enforced during the November election.

According to the Post-Gazette, a Simpson decision next summer would give the state Supreme Court time to review and issue its own decision in time for the November 2013 election.

But Patrick Cawley, the state's senior deputy attorney general, would like to see the issue resolved much sooner, possibly in time for the municipal primaries to be held in May.
