Voter Purge in Virginia Prompts Protests

By    |   Monday, 14 October 2013 04:03 PM EDT

Both Republicans and Democrats are protesting an election directive that would purge 57,000 registered voters from the Virginia rolls just weeks before a contentious gubernatorial election.

The Democratic Party of Virginia has filed a lawsuit to block the order, and although the State Board of Elections (SBE) issued the directive, Democrats blame the Republican candidate, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, for the purge.

A spokesman for Cuccinelli's office said the Democrats' "baseless assertion that the attorney general 'is enforcing the SBE's unlawful purging of voters' is patently false," The Washington Times reports.

The action is part of a multistate initiative to review votes cast in multiple jurisdictions to validate where voters are entitled to cast ballots.

The Virginia-Pilot reports that the general registrar responsible for the task in one Republican-heavy county said the list was inaccurate and unreliable, and he refused to conduct the purge until after the November election.

The lawsuit on behalf of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe argues that the court should follow federal law, which prohibits the removal of voters from registration lists within 90 days of a federal primary or election.
