Ronald Reagan on Veterans Day: Remember 'What We Stand For'

Sixty years ago today, an act of Congress officially changed Nov. 11 from Armistice Day to Veterans Day to honor all those who have served in the U.S. military.

Veterans Day, which began as Armistice Day to mark the 11 a.m. ceasefire on Nov. 11,  1918, between Germany and Allied nations that ended World War I, was designated a federal holiday in 1954.

On Veterans Day in 1985, President Ronald Reagan saluted veterans during a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, while saying that peace must be maintained through the strength of the courageous.

"We celebrate veterans on the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I,” he said, The Daily Signal reported.

"Peace fails when we forget what we stand for. It fails when we forget that our republic is based on firm principles, that with them we are the last best hope of man," Reagan said.

"Peace is only maintained and won by those who have clear eyes and brave minds. In memory of those who gave the last full measure of devotion, may our efforts to achieve lasting peace gain strength."
