A Las Vegas Democrat looks poised to become the first lawmaker in Nevada history to be expelled from the state’s Legislature.
Assemblyman Steven Brooks has been arrested twice in the past two months, forcibly hospitalized for a mental evaluation, and stands accused of threatening to physically injure a Democratic Party leader.
The two-term congressman has been banned from the Legislative Building in Carson City and was placed on administrative leave just a week after he took office on Feb. 4 following his re-election.
A select committee is meeting on Tuesday evening to decide his fate. The meeting has been moved to a Carson City courtroom for security reasons,
Fox News reports. While the committee will not investigate the arrests, they will focus on Brooks’ behavior as a lawmaker.
“It’s been an unfortunate situation that clearly has been more than a minimal distraction,” said Assembly Majority Leader William Horne, a Las Vegas Democrat who is leading the bipartisan panel of seven.
Removing him from the Legislature would require a two-thirds majority, or 28 votes in the 42-member Assembly.
Brooks was first arrested in January for threatening Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick.
Shortly thereafter, police were called to his grandmother’s home for a domestic issue. He was arrested once again on Feb. 10 for a domestic disturbance involving his estranged wife.
