Report Cites 'Radicalization' of US Prisoners

Tuesday, 19 January 2010 05:09 PM EST

U.S. law enforcement authorities have told a Senate panel that they believe as many as three dozen Americans who converted to Islam in prison have traveled to Yemen, possibly to train with al-Qaida.

According to a report written by Sen. John Kerry's staff on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the group has expanded its recruitment efforts to attract "non-traditional followers and adapted its operations."

The report declares that "despite setbacks, al-Qaida is not on the run." An advanced copy of the report, which will be released Wednesday, was obtained by The Associated Press.
