RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Authorities say 10 people are confirmed dead after storms spawning tornadoes swept through a small eastern North Carolina county.
Bertie County Manager Zee Lamb said Sunday that one person also is missing. He said authorities have identified nine of the dead but did not release their names or ages.
Lamb said search teams were preparing to go out to the hardest-hit areas as dawn broke Sunday, looking for other victims. He says the tornado that struck around 7 p.m. Saturday flipped cars, swept homes from their foundations and demolished other houses.
Bertie County has about 21,000 people and is about 130 miles east of Raleigh.
At least 14 people died in North Carolina from Saturday's tornadoes, bringing the death toll from the band of storms to at least 35 overall.
