BOSTON (AP) — Illegal immigrant students are shedding blood over the DREAM Act — literally.
The students donated blood Friday at Harvard University and other colleges. It's part of a nationally organized effort to push the DREAM Act, a bill in Congress that would give a pathway to citizenship to illegal immigrants who go to college or serve in the military.
The immigrant students say the blood donations show they are ready to perform community service and that they are part of U.S. society.
Advocates say others have donated blood in California, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Texas and Virginia.
Red Cross spokeswoman Stephanie Millian says blood donors need identification, but blood collection workers don't check immigration status.
