The University of Miami plans to offer incoming students whose parents came to the United States illegally a free college education under a new plan.
The Naples Daily News reports that the school will begin offering the full scholarships for the fall 2018 semester.
The DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival) program was established in 2012 during the Obama administration. It allows children who illegally came to the U.S. as minors with their parents to temporarily remain in the country as they seek work once they become adults.
The University of Miami will rely on a grant called U Dreamers to provide a free education to DACA recipients.
"We know there's high-achieving DACA students all over the U.S. who, unfortunately because of their circumstances, are not able to go on to college and get a degree," assistant director of undergraduate admission Iris Florez told the Daily News.
President Donald Trump is expected to decide soon whether or not to keep the DACA program in place. An internal debate on the issue has been ongoing at the White House for six months.
A report last week claimed that it appears Trump will rescind the program, although the administration has not publicly commented.
