The University of Florida has joined with the FBI to investigate 15 simultaneous Twitter messages threatening to "shoot up the college,"
according to USA Today.
The institution, sent out an email alert at 1 a.m. Wednesday about the threats, which warned, "I’m gonna shoot up the college tomorrow."
In the alert, the university’s police department (UFPD) said the threat is "general in nature" and that the "credibility of the threat is considered to be low at this time."
According to the newspaper, campus police are using FBI resources to establish who issued the threats.
Although the university decided against canceling classes, the number of patrols have been stepped up and police presence around campus has been increased.
The tweets, each containing the exact same threat, were sent from all over the country, and were addressed to @GatorZoneFB, the official Twitter account of UF Football.
The University Athletic Association staff informed UFPD of the threats, which then alerted the school, USA Today reported.
The threats are being taken very seriously in light of the shooting incident two weeks ago at
Florida State University when three students were shot in the library before the gunman was killed by campus police.
