As Pennsylvania Counties Push Against Lockdown, Trump Signals Support

By    |   Monday, 11 May 2020 05:05 PM EDT

President Donald Trump on Monday criticized Pennsylvania for moving slowly to reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic and tweeted that residents there “want their freedom.”

“The great people of Pennsylvania want their freedom now, and they are fully aware of what that entails,” he tweeted.

“The Democrats are moving slowly, all over the USA, for political purposes,” the president said. “They would wait until November 3rd if it were up to them. Don’t play politics. Be safe, move quickly!”

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf replied, "I don't know how you stay safe and move quickly.

“We're trying to move deliberately. In Pennsylvania, I closed down the state, the Commonwealth closed down the state, in a measured, staged manner. We're reopening in the same measured, staged manner. I think that's aimed at keeping people as safe as we possibly can in these uncharted waters. I think that's the responsible thing to do," Wolf said.

Rep. Brandon Boyle, a Pennsylvania Democrat, slammed Trump for his comments and tweeted: “As one of the ‘people of Pennsylvania’ let me tell you what we really want: for you to get a clue and start acting like a real president.”

But according to multiple news sites, several counties have indicated plans to push ahead on reopening regardless of the governor's plans, notably in the Susquehanna Valley.

WGAL Channel 8 said Lancaster County is the most recent to announce their plans to reopen, sending a letter to the governor saying the county is ready to reopen this Friday. County leaders noted hospitals have not been overwhelmed through the pandemic, and have sufficient capacity to treat COVID-19 patients.
