An IRS official has reportedly filed a whistleblower complaint saying he was told at least one Treasury Department political appointee tried to improperly interfere with the annual audit of the president or vice president's tax returns.

The Washington Post, citing unnamed sources, reported the complaint from a career IRS official has been flagged to a federal judge by congressional Democrats.

Trump administration officials dismissed the complaint as flimsy because it is based on conversations with other government officials, the Post reported.

The IRS complaint comes in the wake of another whistleblower account from a member of the intelligence community that President Donald Trump requested Ukranian leaders to investigate Joe Biden. That, in turn, sparked an impeachment probe on Capitol Hill.

The new complaint also comes as House Democrats ramp up a battle with Treasury over the release of Trump's tax returns. Part of that inquiry from Democrats is over how the IRS conducts its annual audit of the president and vice president's tax returns. That process is supposed to be walled off from political appointees and interference.

Trump has closely guarded any details of his tax returns, refusing to release them during his presidential campaign and throughout his presidency.
