The Army and Marine Corps are seeking an extension on putting together a policy that would allow transgender people to apply for and be accepted to their services, according to a new report.
USA Today cites government officials who said the two services have requested extensions from the upcoming July 1 deadline of up to two years.
Transgender troops already in the military are allowed to remain in place following a Pentagon policy change last year. Before that, they were not allowed to serve openly in any branch of service.
A government source told USA Today the Army and Marines do not yet believe they have enough information to make an informed decision on a new transgender policy.
According to the San Diego Union Tribune, between 6,000 and 14,000 transgender troops are currently on active duty. There are 1.3 million active troops across the military.
Last fall, the Army said it received requests from 10 transgender soldiers to serve in their preferred gender after the ban on them serving openly was lifted.
