A Tennessee state lawmaker says transgender individuals suffer from a "mental disorder" and the Obama administration is force-feeding the nation into allowing them to use whichever bathroom they wish.
Republican Rep. Susan Lynn — who wants schools to make students to use the bathroom that corresponds with the sex on their birth certificates —
wrote on her Facebook page on Friday:
"Transgenderism is a mental disorder called gender identity disorder — no one should be forced to entertain another's mental disorder and it is not healthy for the individual with the disorder ...
"We can and we will legislatively protect children from hormone abuse — a directive has no impact on that issue only the Orwellian redefinition of sex would do that."
Her missive came after the
Obama administration ordered every public school district in the United States to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms that match the gender identity they have chosen.
Lynn added that the order had "blatant disregard for student privacy and safety."
Officials of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network of Middle Tennessee rejected Lynn's remarks in a
statement to The Tennessean newspaper.
"It's deeply disappointing to hear untrue and divisive vitriol by our elected leaders in light of this remarkable moment — one that is encouraging and affirming for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students," the group's co-chair Justin Sweatman-Weaver said.
"Rhetoric from our elected leaders that perpetuates stigma and misunderstanding only further disenfranchises and endangers an already unfairly targeted group."
