A spokesman for New York University said the school received an online threat against American colleges and universities, DNAInfo.com reported.
"NYU received a message via a general 'webform' that carried a broad threat of violence against American colleges and universities," NYU’s John Beckman told
DNAInfo.com. "We are not aware of any specific threat against NYU; we will be working closely with law enforcement and following their guidance on campus safety."
Beckman said the school, located in downtown Manhattan, immediately reported the online threat to the New York City Police Department and the FBI.
The NYPD told DNAInfo the note is being investigated.
An FBI spokesperson added: "In this day and age, it is easy to spout threats and attempt to spread fear. … As [FBI] Director [James] Comey has stated, we ask the public to not let fear become disabling."
