A man in Dallas was arrested and charged with murder after he shot a burglar outside his home and went back to bed.
According to The Dallas Morning News, James Michael Meyer, 72, awoke to a noise outside his home and saw someone attempting to use a pickax to get into his shed around 5 a.m. on Sept. 26. The homeowner grabbed his handgun, went outside, and yelled at the person to stop or he would shoot.
Meyer told police the man walked toward him, at which point he fired one shot — which he said prompted the man to take off. Meyer then fired one more shot "into the night" toward a park where the alleged burglar was headed, and then he went back to bed.
Roughly two hours later, Meyer got up, looked outside, and saw something lying in the park. He went out to investigate and discovered the alleged burglar's body. Meyer's wife consulted a lawyer before they called police.
Meyer told responding officers he collected his spent shell casings and threw them in the trash. Neighbors said they heard three shots, not two as Meyer claimed to have fired.
