Terror Preparedness Bill to Hit $2.1 Billion

Thursday, 25 August 2011 04:22 PM EDT

Taxpayers will fork over $2.1 billion in fiscal 2011 to help nonprofits and local governments protect themselves from the specter of terrorism, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says.

The money will “assist states, cities, tribal and territorial governments, nonprofit agencies, and the private sector in strengthening our nation's ability to prevent, protect, respond to, recover from, and mitigate terrorist attacks, major disasters, and other emergencies," according to CNSNews.com.

The payout includes $329 million to local governments for emergency preparedness, $200 million to operators of transit systems, $54 million to help coordinate various levels of state and local governments, and $10 million to tribal bodies to enhance terrorism response.

"The FY 2011 homeland security grants are focused on mitigating and responding to the evolving threats we face,” Napolitano said.
