Survey: Democrats More Likely to Unfriend On Social Media Due to Politics

Democrats are twice as likely to unfriend someone on social media and avoid certain relatives during the holidays because of politics, according to a survey conducted by PRRI.

"More than one in ten (13 percent) Americans say they blocked, unfriended, or stopped following someone on social media because of what they posted about politics," says the report, based on a survey conducted among 1,004 adults between Dec. 7-11. "Democrats are more than twice as likely as Republicans to report unfriending someone over politics (24 percent vs. 9 percent), and that number rises even more among women."

PRRI also queried Americans on what the appropriate holiday greeting should be, of interest considering President-elect Donald Trump's message to supporters at a rally in early December that he would bring back the "Merry Christmas" greeting.

Forty-seven percent of Americans polled said stores and businesses should greet customers with "Happy Holidays" or "Season's Greetings" out of respect for people's religious beliefs while 46 percent said customers should be greeted with "Merry Christmas."
