A majority of voters back President Joe Biden's intention to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court, according to a Morning Consult/Politico poll released on Wednesday.
A full 51% of those surveyed said they support the president’s vow to nominate the first Black woman to be a Supreme Court justice, with 23% saying they had no opinion, and 28% saying they opposed the plan to some degree.
Biden has the chance to follow through on a campaign promise to nominate a Black woman after Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer announced his plans to retire last month, The Hill reported.
Other results from the poll include:
- Among Democrats, 82% back Biden's decision, compared to 47% of independents, and 19% of Republicans.
- When asked how they felt about Biden's vow, 49% said they were confident about it while 50% said they did not feel confident in it.
- Just about half — 48% — said it is unimportant that Biden choose a Black female judge, while 38% said it is important.
- Among Democrats, 66% said it is important for the president to pick a Black female judge, but among independents the number was 30%, and among Republicans only 13%.
The Morning Consult/Politico poll was carried out between Jan. 28-30 with a sample size of 2005 registered voters. The results of the survey have a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
