A New York City police officer committed suicide this weekend, fatally shooting himself at his Staten Island home, the fifth NYPD suicide this month, according to The New York Times.
The Sergeants Benevolent Association tweeted Saturday:
"Once again terrible news. Tonight the NYPD lost a sergeant to suicide. We ask that everyone pray for his family, friends and Co-workers. The NYPD continues to go through a difficult time. We know you won't call the Dept if you need help please call the SBA please! 🙏➕👮♀️🇺🇸"
The instances of NYPD suicide come as protesters have doused officers with water and President Donald Trump has called on NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio to "act" against anti-police activity.
The NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill has declared a mental health crisis after the spate of suicides, including:
- Deputy Chief Steven J. Silks on June 5.
- Officer Michael Caddy on June 14.
- Officer Kevin Preiss on June 26.
"It is okay to seek help from others," Commissioner O'Neill said in a statement, according to the Times. "The tragic news today that another member of the NYPD has been lost to suicide breaks our hearts, and is a deep sorrow felt by all of New York City. To every member of the NYPD, please know this: it is okay to feel vulnerable."
