The principal of a Pennsylvania high school has blocked editors of the student newspaper from posting articles on its website after they removed the word "redskin" from a story without permission.

Robert McGee approved an article about the third Annual "Mr. Redskin Competition" a male talent show, for publication in Neshaminy High School's Playwickian newspaper, The Bucks County Courier Times reports.

But without permission, a majority of the newspaper's editors decided to redact the school mascot name, printing it as "R------" in accordance with the Associated Press stylebook. The paper has not published the name since 2013, after deciding it was derogatory towards Native Americans.

But according to a school policy, the school administrator has the "final authority" in what is published.

The word has also been the subject of national controversy involving the Washington Redskins football team. Many believe the team's name should be changed and some newspapers have stopped using the word.
