Musician Stevie Wonder on Saturday got down on both knees before saying a prayer for, "our planet, our future, our leaders of the world," ahead of his performance at the 2017 Global Citizen Festival in New York.

"Tonight, I'm taking a knee for America," he said.

"But not just one, knee. I'm taking both knees. Both knees, and prayer for our planet, our future, our leaders of the world."

The move comes after President Donald Trump criticized athletes who kneel during the national anthem, saying they should be fired while calling for fans to "pick up and leave" professional football games when players do so.

"Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, you'd say, 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out! He's fired," Trump told his Friday night audience in Alabama.

Trump has faced backlash from some NFL players and executives, who say the athletes have the right to speak freely.
