Scalise 2 Years After Shooting: 'I Feel Great'

(Fox News' "Fox & Friends")

By    |   Wednesday, 26 June 2019 02:25 PM EDT

Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., says he is ready for Wednesday night's congressional baseball game – two years after being shot while practicing for the annual event.

Scalise made his comments Wednesday while being interviewed on Fox News' "Fox & Friends."

He acknowledged he was still dealing with some mobility issues after being shot at a park outside of Washington in 2017. Scalise still uses crutches for long distances, but said he hopes to be rid of them by the end of the year.

"It's been quite a road," he said. "I feel great. I can definitely feel how much better I am now, especially than last year. I'm still lucky to be alive but able to move around a whole lot better."

Scalise recalled that when the shooting stared, he began to pray.

"It was amazing how that removed so much of the anxiety and all of a sudden I was calm, and I knew that God was taking care of me, and boy did he ever," he said.

Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, who serves as the Republican congressional baseball team's manager, was present the day of the shootings and said he was not shocked by the incident.

"We have so much anger up here and division," he said. "I wasn't surprised that somebody lost it."

The gunman was shot and killed by police.
