Comedian and late-show host Stephen Colbert says his live election-night special for Showtime was the hardest thing he's ever done, according to the New York Post.
At a fundraising event for the Montclair, N.J., Film Festival last Saturday, "The Late Show" star, along fellow "The Daily Show" alum John Oliver — who now hosts "Last Week Tonight" — said he and his writers "were so loaded for every possible eventuality" on election night.
"We planned for every event — and then there was the show we did, which was Donald Trump is going to win and we know he's going to win," he said, the Post reported.
With the Trump victory, Colbert said, some members of the studio audience "were sobbing openly" — as were some of his staff.
"That show was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life," he declared, the Post reported.
According to Colbert, the production crew had two-and-a-half episodes worth of pre-taped segments and guests based on a Hillary Clinton win, and even a plan for a potential Donald Trump victory, the Post reported.
"My execs and my writers were like, 'You don't want to write something for [a definite Trump win]?' I'm like, 'No. There is nothing you can write,'" he recalled, the Post reported.
"I have 400 people in my theater, if we know Donald Trump is going to win, it's going to be like doing stand-up comedy for one of those Chilean soccer stadiums where they bring in the villagers to execute the neighbors," he said.
