Thirty-six percent of Americans think moving away from capitalism and more toward socialism would be a good thing, according to a Fox News poll released Wednesday.

Fifty-one percent think the move would be a bad thing, but the figure is up 16 percent since Aug. 12.

The socialist term has picked up attention in the last month or so, specifically after Democratic rising star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won the primary for New York's 14th Congressional District in early July. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has always pushed a socialist agenda, and the pair in late July campaigned together in Kansas where Ocasio Cortez emphasized the positions she shares with Sanders: Medicare-for-all and free college.

"They said the people of Kansas did not want these things," she said. "They told me I would not be welcomed. But you have proven them wrong."

The Democratic Socialist movement has grown significantly since 2015, with membership in the Democratic Socialists of America group growing sevenfold since then, from around 6,000 to 43,000 as of early July.

The Fox News poll is based on interviews with 1,009 randomly chosen registered voters nationwide from Aug. 19-21, 2018. The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points for all registered voters.
