A personal finance website has compiled statistics that point to the "most sinful states in America" in terms of crime, boozing, porn addiction and greed.
"Red states and blue states may like to point to one another as the source of all that is wrong with the U.S., but the truth is that each of the 50 states has its own virtues and vices," says Adam McCann, a financial writer at Wallethub, which conducted the survey.
WalletHub compared the 50 states across 38 key indicators of immorality and found:
- The most sinful states overall are Florida, California, Nevada, Texas and Georgia.
- States with the most violent crimes, per capita, are Alaska, New Mexico, Nevada, Tennessee and Louisiana.
- States with the most excessive drinking are Wisconsin, North Dakota, Vermont, Maine and Minnesota.
- States with the highest porn site usage are Mississippi, Hawaii, Arkansas, Alabama and Louisiana.
- States with the most beauty salons are New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and California.
- States with the highest number of inactive adults are Arkansas, Mississippi, New Jersey, Georgia and Florida.
- States with the highest amount of gambling disorders are New Mexico, New York, Connecticut, Kentucky and Florida.
- States with the most thefts are New Mexico, Washington, Alaska, Louisiana and Arkansas.
McCann notes the cost of state sins are high — gambling alone costs the U.S. about $5 billion per year and smoking over $300 billion per year.
