Here’s proof that you can teach an old politician new tricks — its former senator Alan Simpson dancing up a storm in a new video as he admonishes young people to get involved in lowering the nation’s debt.
The 81-year-old Wyoming Republican is seen boogying to “Gangham Style," a wildly-popular, international hit by South Korean recording sensation PSY.
“Stop Instagramming your breakfast and tweeting your #FirstWorldProblems and getting on YouTube to watch ‘Gangnam Style’,” Simpson, 81, says in an eyepopping new video, which is posted on YouTube.com
“Start using those precious social media skills to go out and sign people up on this baby!”
Simpson made the one-minute video in collaboration with The Can Kicks Back, a non-partisan group lobbying for a bipartisan solution to America’s debt crisis and looming fiscal cliff.
Dancing next to a gyrating man in a colorful, aluminum can get-up, a grinning Simpson wiggles his body and waves his arms in the air as he asks young people to sign a petition on TheCanKicksBack.org.
He warns that if they remain apathetic, “These old coots will clean out the Treasury before you get there!”
Cason Romano, a recent college graduate and one of the leaders behind The Can Kicks Back, told ABC News last month that America’s leaders have to reach out to the nation’s youth.
"It's a Catch-22," he said. "If our elected officials and politicians aren't talking to young people, then young people aren't hearing why it's important they get involved with the issues they care about.’’
